Few blues recordings carry the quiet authority of this 1964 album from Muddy Waters because Folk Singer strips the genre to its acoustic core. Recorded in Chicago with a small ensemble including a young Buddy Guy, bassist Willie Dixon and drummer Francis Clay, the record trades electric swagger for honest intimacy and plenty of atmospheric space. Songs such as 'My Home Is in the Delta', 'Good Morning Little School Girl' and 'Feel Like Going Home' unfold in their own time and allow Waters' weathered voice and storytelling to take centre stage. Spare yet expressive, this is a defining statement of early acoustic blues.
