Trojan's Funk The Reggae Beat hits like hard bass shell fire, rekindling the moment Jamaican producers curved US funk's clipped, slap-bassed face round rocksteady's residual sway. Figures Lloyd Charmers and Lee Perry lead the record, as studio bands like The Hippy Boys and The Upsetters would reconstitute local ideas to riddims primed and polished for version reuse, be that 'Look-Ka-Py-Py' or 'Funk The Beat'. Ken Boothe's take on 'Is It Because I'm Black' and Alton Ellis tackling 'It's Your Thing' then presage the British-based outfits such as Greyhound, underlining the sound's feedforward, near-destined impact on UK scenes.
